Elmer (Basie), Charles Givens was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa on October 15, 1916. He was the youngest of five children born to the late
George and Velma Givens. He received his formal education in the public schools of Omaha, Nebraska, graduating from Commerical
(Technical ) High School in 1932.
From youth, Elmer had a love for music. He made his first band instrument, a bass , from a number 10 tub, and a broom stick.
From this instrument a bass, he acquired the nickname "BASIE". He enjoyed playing, writing, and arranging music, which he was excellent at doing. During the late 30's and early 40's Basie organized and conducted his own band that traveled throughout the United States and Canada. He also conducted other bands until his health demised.
Basie, was recognized as one of the foremost jazz musicians in the country. He was a charter member of the Omaha Musicians Association Local 70-558. He served as Vice President for over eight years, and holding that office at the time of his death in 1986.
He was instrumental in uniting the two unions, one black, one white, into one Local 70-558.
In his lifetime Basie inspired and helped many people reach their goals in the music world and in other fields of endeavor.
He never missed an opportunity to come to the aid of his fellow man.
Basie and his wife, Magnolia (Mack) owned and operated the Givens' Janitorial Service. For over thirty-three years their business has been associated with many of Omaha's largest corporations.
Basie's desire was to see Omaha as a Music Mecca for musicians and others in the midwest area.
